Careers Seminar Inspires Pupils with Insights into Architecture
We recently had the privilege of welcoming Mr Mark Owen from Owen Hicks Architecture to RGS Worcester to lead an engaging Careers Seminar for pupils. Mr Owen provided an insightful overview of architecture as a profession, highlighting its diversity, challenges, and rewards.
The Seminar explored the vast array of roles and specialisations within the field of architecture, emphasising creativity, community, and sustainability. Pupils learned about the varied projects architects undertake, ranging from designing furniture and interior spaces to constructing bridges and large-scale structures. The importance of technical skills, such as drawing and computing, and a solid understanding of legislation and social impacts were also key points of discussion.
Mr Owen delved into the different career paths available to aspiring architects. He explained routes such as University education, Apprenticeships, and gaining experience in an architect’s office, sharing personal anecdotes to illustrate the challenges and rewards of each. Pupils gained a deeper understanding of the qualifications required, including the RIBA accreditation and the opportunities for professional growth through part-time study and work placements.
The Seminar also highlighted project management, problem-solving, and the importance of teamwork in architecture. Pupils were encouraged to view architecture as a dynamic field that requires balancing creativity with practical considerations, such as energy efficiency, client needs, and regulatory compliance.
To extend the Seminar, Mr Owen and Head of Careers, Mrs Williams, announced an exciting architecture competition for pupils in Years Seven to Upper Sixth. With prizes on offer, the competition challenges participants to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills to a real-world architectural brief. Pupils interested in participating are invited to visit the Careers Room to learn more about the competition details and get started.
This Careers Seminar inspired pupils to explore architecture as a career and provided pupils with practical guidance on the journey from academic study to professional practice. Thank you to Mr Owen for giving up his time and sharing his architecture journey with the pupils.
