A Year of Charity, Community and Generosity
The RGS Worcester community has once again shown generous support this year, raising just under £9,000 for a wide range of charities.
Fundraising has been led by an enthusiastic and committed Charity Committee, co-chaired by Upper Sixth students Menaal and Alex. Many members of the Committee first joined in Year Ten and have continued to play an important role in supporting charitable activity across the School.
This year, the School has supported a number of charities, including BBC Children in Need, Comic Relief, Acorns Children’s Hospice, St Richard’s Hospice, Worcester Snoezelen, the Myriad Centre, Macmillan Cancer Support, the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby.
The School has also responded to local appeals from Worcester Foodbank and Maggs Day Centre, with several van loads of food, toiletries and other essential items delivered throughout the year.
The Sixth Form’s chosen charity this year was Acorns Children’s Hospice, with more than £1,000 raised through a Christmas Jumper Day and a Valentine’s Day event. Worcester Snoezelen also received excellent support from Mr Peter Brownley, who runs Joe’s Café in Gordon House, with Christmas and Easter raffles raising £1,100 through generous donations and a generous selection of chocolate prizes.
Fundraising across the year has also included Non-Uniform Days, a Staff v Sixth Form Netball match, the Lower School Harvest Festival, bucket collections and a range of games and activities.
The support of parents, pupils, students, teachers and support staff is central to the School’s fundraising efforts and is very much appreciated. A special thanks goes to Mrs Margaret Sturdy who has spearheaded our charity work over the 21 years she has worked at RGS as Pastoral Secretary. Mrs Sturdy has been instrumental in encouraging our entire school community to think of others and support them through fundraising initiatives. She has helped raise many hundreds of thousands of pounds for local and national charitites. Thank you to Mrs Sturdy and to everyone who has contributed so generously to this year’s charity work.
