A Summer of Sport, Culture and Adventure in South Africa
This summer, 39 pupils from Years Ten to Lower Sixth, accompanied by six members of staff, embarked on a Hockey and Netball Tour to South Africa.
The Tour began on 1 August with a flight from Heathrow to Johannesburg, followed by a connection to Cape Town, where both squads took to the courts and pitches for two rounds of fixtures. The opening matches brought narrow defeats against talented local schools and competitive adult club sides, but the teams responded in style, securing emphatic wins in their second set of games. Their performances highlighted not only their skill and determination, but also the strength of their teamwork.
Beyond the sporting contests, the group embraced the chance to immerse themselves in South Africa’s culture and natural beauty. From taking a cable car to the summit of Table Mountain and visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach, to exploring the vibrant V&A Waterfront and learning to surf in the South Atlantic, Cape Town.
The Tour then moved to Johannesburg, where the teams continued their strong form, winning three out of four Netball fixtures. A particular highlight was the opportunity to socialise with their opponents after matches, sharing stories and forging friendships.
Cultural exploration also played a role in the Tour. Pupils took part in a canopy tour through the canyons of the Magaliesburg Mountains and enjoyed an evening at the Lesedi Cultural Village, where they learned about traditional tribal life in the Cape provinces.
The final days were spent at the Bakubung Bush Lodge, offering pupils the chance to take part in two remarkable game drives in the Pilanesberg National Park. The excitement of spotting four of the Big Five animals was a fitting finale to the trip, creating memories to last a lifetime.
Head of Hockey and Tour leader, Miss Walton OLY, reflected on the experience, describing it as “a fantastic blend of sporting development, cultural education and personal growth and a superb example of what can be achieved when Sport and travel come together.”
