RGS Golfers Swing into Action
This academic year the Golf season started at the end of September with our first round match against King’s School in the Independent Schools Matchplay Tournament. The tie was played at the Worcester Golf and Country Club with all three of the RGS Golfers playing to their potential. The Golfers came away victorious in each of their matches: Josh Griffiths having a ‘Ryder Cup’ style comeback against the opposition’s number one player and a 2&1 win on the 17th hole. Max Wesley had a rather more straight forward match with a comfortable 5&4 win and Ellie Dicken dominated her match with a 9&7 win against her opponent.
The 3-0 victory against King’s School Worcester meant we played Dean Close earlier this week in Round two. The opposition had three strong players who were all single handicappers and so our team knew it was going to be challenge to progress to the area Semi-final. Josh Griffiths maintained his excellent record in this competition with a hard-fought win against Dean Close’s best player 4&2. Max Wesley and George Hallam found themselves up against talented twins and, although they put some pressure on their opponents on the front nine, they could not match the high calibre stroke play.
With a large number of the RGS community playing Golf now, it will be interesting to witness how the pupils develop their Golf skills over the winter months. There will be further opportunities for the pupils to represent the School when the weather warms up again. Please do keep Mr Davis (scd@rgsw.org.uk) updated of any changes to handicaps.
In further Golf news, Josh Griffiths recently took part in an exciting event, the Mizuno Pairs (men’s) tournament at Droitwich Golf Club. In this pairs competition, Josh and his partner set out a winning strategy; they combined skill and a bit of luck to achieve an outstanding gross team score of -6 for the 18 holes. That resulted in them winning the overall gross prize with Josh winning the men’s longest drive competition, achieving a drive of 340 yards. Josh did admit that he may have had a little wind in his favour!
Well done to our RGS Golfers we look forward to hearing more updates from the season.
Mr Stuart Davis, Head of Golf
