Oxbridge Alumni Return to Inspire Future Applicants
We were delighted to welcome back three RGS Alumni this week for an Oxbridge Q&A session aimed at current pupils in the Middle School and Lower Sixth who are thinking of applying to Oxford or Cambridge Universities. James Preece, Mar Poyser and Elizabeth McCabe finished their A Level studies at RGS last Trinity term and have since gone on to complete their first term at University. Mar is studying Engineering and James is studying Human and Political Sciences (HSPS) at Cambridge. Elizabeth chose a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) at Oxford. It was fantastic to welcome back such high achieving Alumni and hear how they are enjoying these challenging degree courses.
The Q&A session covered the rigorous application process, personal statement writing, admissions tests and more as the former RGS students spoke from their first-hand experience as first-year Undergraduates.
Admission to Oxbridge is extremely competitive and the objective of the Q&A session was to help provide an insight into the process. The students spoke of the importance of being a self-motivated and independent thinker, being well read and engaged in your subject beyond the A Level syllabus and being empathetic and willing to consider different viewpoints at interview.
RGS Worcester provides a wealth of support for students applying to Oxford and Cambridge. This provision includes the allocation of personal subject mentors to help guide the subject specific part of student preparations, personal statement writing support, admission test and interview support and practice as well as help with the selection of a College which best meets the individual student’s needs. The whole process is overseen by a dedicated team of staff who provide real expertise and encouraging support to all applicants, recognising that the process for an Oxbridge application is extremely competitive and involves an interview, unlike many other University applications.
Our returning Alumni are testament to their own dedication and passion for their subjects, as well as the success of the RGS Oxbridge application process and the quality of teaching and admission support provided. We would like to thank Mar, James and Elizabeth for taking the time to share their experiences of the Oxbridge admissions process and the start of the undergraduate studies – helping current students to meet their future goals. As they head back to University, in Elizabeth’s case to exams next week, we wish them every future success.
