On Guard: RGS Fencers compete
We are pleased to report a successful outing for RGS fencers last weekend. On Sunday, 21 November, a group of our fencers travelled to King Edward’s School in Edgbaston, to take part in their Individual Épée Competition. The event which was set up as a training event, therefore utilised a format that maximised the number of fights each fencer got and was split into two age groups: Senior – Year Eleven, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth, and Junior – Year Eight, Nine and Ten.
Will Fallows and Jack Pitt both took part in the Senior event and, after the pool stage, were seeded 1st and 7th respectively. After four rounds of elimination style fights, Will was the overall winner, winning the final 15-7 over Warwick Schools’ Captain of Fencing and Jack improved on his seeding to finish 6th.
Meanwhile, RGS pupils Matthew Fallows and Jacob Hartley fenced in the Junior event. Matthew had an exceptional day, only dropping one fight, unfortunately this was the final, resulting in a 15-7 loss to a strong competitor from Bromsgrove School, resulting in him finishing 2nd. Jacob didn’t fare quite so well in the pools and as a result was seeded lower, but still finished 9th.
Well done to all four fencers for a superb day of fencing. Thank you also to Dr Ehlers for his support, organising and refereeing on the day.
