The School Day begins with Registration in form rooms at 8.30 am. Each day has 5 periods (lessons are 1 hour long), with the ordinary School Day ending at 3.45 pm. There is then the opportunity for pupils to take part in after school activities, sports practices and Homework Club is also available. Pupils can stay on-site supervised until 6.00 pm.
There is no formal Saturday school; Sports fixtures are played instead either during the week in Games or on a Saturday and are published to parents in advance.
-
There are approximately 120 pupils in each Year group (6 classes) and RGS has a ratio of boy : girl which is almost exactly 50 : 50 so we are truly a co-educational school.
Depending upon each Year group and Subject option, class sizes tend to be around 18-24 pupils with classes in the Sixth Form being significantly smaller. This way, we ensure the teachers really do know the pupils well.
-
Each year, we have around 50 pupils join RGS Worcester in Year Seven from Primary and Prep Schools and 50-70 pupils join from the RGSW Prep Schools. Pupils join RGS from over 45 different schools so often one or two pupils will join from a primary school. We work hard to ensure that pupils are put into form groups with a mix of both RGS Prep pupils and those from external schools.
-
The Entrance Exam is also the Academic Scholarship Exam so all pupils are automatically entered for an Academic Scholarship. Those who perform particularly well in the Entrance Exams will be considered for a Scholarship which is a percentage reduction in the School Fees.
Pupils applying from the RGSW Prep Schools will need to apply to sit the Scholarship Exam by contacting the Registrar.
The Entrance Exam is on Saturday 30 January.
For Art, Drama, Music, and Sports Scholarships, parents should complete a Scholarship Application form and the children will then be invited to the relevant Assessment days in the weeks prior to the Entrance Exam. These days are great fun and an opportunity to meet the staff and learn more about each aspect of RGS.
-
All external applicants sitting at 11+ and 13+ will automatically be considered for Academic Scholarships. Those 11+ pupils we feel are potential Scholars will be invited back during the week following the Exam for some extension work and an interview with the Headmaster.
We also offer Scholarships at 11+ in Art, Drama, Music and Sport.
At 13+ (Year Nine entry) and 16+ (Sixth Form entry), we offer Design Technology and Textiles Scholarships in addition to Art, Drama, Music and Sport. There is a Scholarship Application form that needs to be completed and returned to the Registrar by the closing date (6 January). Auditions and Assessments take place in the weeks prior to the Entrance Examinations.
Internal candidates can also apply for Scholarships at these stages.
-
External candidates are invited into School for an interview with a member of the Sixth Form team and to sit a VRQ.
-
Academic Scholarships are available as are Scholarships in Art, Design Technology, Drama, Music, Sport, and Textiles.
For the Academic Scholarship, candidates sit a paper in the subject of their choice, and the time varies by subject but is usually around two hours. Revision notes are sent to candidates for the Academic Scholarship before the Christmas holiday. Scholarship forms must be returned to the Registrar by both internal and external applicants for Scholarships by 6 January.
For Art, Design Technology, Drama, Music, Sport and Textiles Scholarships, there are Assessment days arranged.
-
This varies by Year group:
At 11+ (Year Seven entry) candidates sit a 45 minute Maths paper, 45 minute English paper and a Verbal Reasoning Questionnaire (VRQ) which lasts for an hour. They also have break and lunch. Pupils sit the exams in classrooms (not an exam hall) and are supported by staff and pupils.
At 12+ or 13+ (Year Eight or Year Nine entry) candidates sit a 45 minute Maths paper, a 1 hour English paper, a Verbal Reasoning Questionnaire (VRQ) which lasts an hour. They also have a brief interview/ discussion with a senior member of staff. They have break and lunch.
At 14+ (Year Ten entry), the requirements are the same as 13+ except the Maths paper is one hour long.
At 16+ (Sixth Form entry), the candidates sit a Verbal Reasoning Questionnaire (VRQ) and have an interview/ discussion with a member of the Sixth Form Team.
All Entrance Exams are on Saturday 30 January 2021, except for Sixth Form, which will be on a date to be confirmed.
-
An alternative date can be arranged with the Registrar.
-
We currently charge £45.00, and this covers the Entrance Examination day and Taster days. There is an acceptance deposit of £100.00. Internal applicants, including those from RGS The Grange and RGS Springfield, have already registered and paid their acceptance fee on entrance to the Prep Schools so there is no additional charge.
-
Bursaries are means-tested financial support for pupils and are available for any pupil joining RGS Worcester at any stage if they qualify for a Bursary and are awarded one following the Entrance Examination. Please review the Policy on ‘Scholarships and Means-Tested Bursaries’ on this website.
Please tick the relevant box on the Registration Form, and return it to us as soon as possible and at least two weeks before the Entrance Examination. Allocation of Bursary funds will be based upon financial circumstances and the performance of the child in the Entrance Exams.
-
There will be a Taster day for registered external 11+ candidates arranged in November (subject to COVID-19 restrictions). Further details will follow. Candidates for Year Eight (12+), Year Nine (13+) and Year Ten (14+) are welcome to attend a Taster day on a date arranged with the Registrar.
-
Sample/ Practice Papers are sent out to applicants who are registered for entry at 11+, 12+ 13+ and 14+ from mid-November. We provide English and Maths Practice Papers. We do not provide examples of VRQ Papers but these can be purchased online or in various bookstores.

Ensuring that pupils settle well at RGS Worcester is extremely important to us. There is an Induction Day for pupils in June which is informal and starts to settle them into the School. There is then a second Induction Day on the day before Term begins in September. This way, the pupils can find out about RGS well before the first day and settle any nerves – and they tend to be excited instead!
If we get the first two to three weeks right then pupils take off at RGS which is why settling them in is our focus early in the new academic year.

As a welcoming and friendly school with high aspirations for our pupils. There are tremendous opportunities available for them and they really do get the most out of school life. We want them to be happy and successful here, and leave as quietly confident young people with a head start in life and ready to take on the world.
RGS lays claim to be the sixth oldest school in the world, and we combine tradition with all the very best that a modern education can offer, including integrating digital technology into learning when it makes a difference. With Personalised Learning offering exceptionally broad subject choice, a strong reputation for Pastoral Care and breath-taking Co-curricular opportunities, we hope to get the very best from each child.
We look forward to welcoming you to RGS Worcester and to you joining the RGS Family.
