Footballing Future for Girls at RGS
Congratulations to Year Ten RGS pupil and keen footballer, Sofia who has received the fantastic news that she has been selected to play for the Worcestershire County Under 16 Football team. Of only 21 players picked for the squad, Sofia was successful and selected to play in the integral role of goalkeeper for the 2021/2022 season.
Sofia was also selected to trial for SR USA football trials over recent weeks and has enjoyed playing for the This Girl Kicks Under 16, elite football team in a prestigious fixture on Tuesday this week at St George’s Park, home of the England team.
Sofia is now looking forward to more fixtures and tours planned for 2022 and 2023 with Worcestershire Schools FA, This Girl Kicks and her local football team Droitwich Spa Belles Under 16.
Sofia said: “Being nominated for the trials was amazing and then to be selected was incredible! The coaching and support staff setup at Worcestershire Schools FA is really great and my teammates are not only very talented footballers, but also really cool! I have also played and trained with This Girl Kicks and again, there is a great level of football with cool players and staff too.”
Sofia is also a superb athlete and receives coaching and mentoring opportunities from members of the Sports Department as part of the RGS Athlete Development Programme.
We now have a Girls Football Club at RGS which is very popular with pupils. Head of Football, Mr Gary Leeds said: “The Girls Football Club was launched at RGS this term and has continued to flourish with well over 30 girls attending regularly. The Club has given the girls an opportunity to express their talents and develop their footballing core skills. This term we have focused on creating space, passing and control under pressure, some attacking and defending components.
Girls Football Club members, Flossie, Lola and Ava have been nominated for County Under 14 trials at the start of the new academic year, and have since represented the County against Lincolnshire.
As the momentum of the Club progresses, we hope to play some fixtures against local schools, enter the Under 14 Worcestershire County Cup and the small sided ISFA Girls Under 13 Tournament in May 2022.”
