Chemists Compete in the Regional Finals of ‘Top of the Bench’ Competition
On Saturday 13 January, the Chemistry Department returned to the Collaborative Teaching Laboratories at Birmingham University for the Regional Finals of the Chemistry ‘Top of the Bench’ competition.
A team of four pupils, Harry Moore, Sihan Fu, Denis Goodwillie-Green and Arthur Hasling followed on from their impressive 4th placing out of around 25 teams in the preliminary round. The team were excited on the minibus journey to Birmingham, revising as many aspects of Chemistry that they could think of, including the structure of Vitamin C.
The day included a written team quiz for an hour followed by an hour-long practical challenge which involved investigating how the mass of Sodium bicarbonate affected the energy change of a neutralisation reaction.
Although the team did not make the top 3 places in the Regional Final, amongst very stiff competition from seasoned competitors from Birmingham and the West Midlands, they gave a very good account of themselves and can be very proud of their achievements.
