Cambridge Debating Competition Success
Once again, RGS Worcester has experienced huge success in Debating, with two teams qualifying for the prestigious Finals Day at the Cambridge Schools competition.
Four teams from RGS Worcester travelled to Bristol for the regional round of the Cambridge Schools competition. This was a long day with four different debates for each pair. Topics for motions ranged from the Co-curricular value of e-sports, to the benefits of an imaginary world where people cannot lie. Points scored for first, second, third and fourth in each debate were used to create a ‘league table’ with the four top performing teams going forwards. Of the four teams to qualify, half were from RGS Worcester; an immense achievement from Oscar Haynes, Callum Lockett, Tobey Butler and Rayyan Styles.
Not only did two teams qualify, but the first placed team also came from RGS Worcester! Oscar Haynes and Callum Lockett won all but one of their four debates, with particularly impressive performances in closing.
Isaac McManus, who with Charlie White also enjoyed success in winning two of their four debates, said of the competition:
“Cambridge regional was an amazing opportunity for all of us. We particularly enjoyed getting to meet fellow debaters from other schools and participating in this prestigious event. With half the teams that reached the Finals being from RGS, we are incredibly proud of our performance and hope to get similar results at Oxford regionals”.
The Finals are usually international events with teams qualifying from across the UK and worldwide from countries including Canada, Malaysia and Slovenia. It is a huge achievement for RGS to be so well-represented and we wish them all the best for Finals Day on 18 March.
