A Knight’s Tale- Bringing Literature to Life
The first half of the Michaelmas term came to a gallant, chivalrous, medieval conclusion for Year Seven English pupils who enjoyed a visit from two very special guests, Sir Bedivere and Sir Christofere.
Also known as Mr Owens and his twin brother Chris, the two medieval actors treated Year Seven to a spectacular display of weaponry, armour and battle skills. The brothers brought the legends of King Arthur to life with a vivid, stirring and dramatic retelling of one of The Round Table’s greatest battles. Mr Owens and his brother are experts on medieval military history and provided pupils with superb insights into the life of a knight during the Middle Ages.
Their visit was a fantastic way to complement the work Year Seven pupils have been doing this Half term on the History of English and their study of Beowulf, Chaucer and other texts written before 1400.
Following a talk about chivalry and the depiction of knights in several medieval texts, Year Seven had the chance to try out some of the armour, shields and other equipment Mr Owens and his brother use in their medieval re-enactments and had the opportunity to form a highly effective looking defensive shield wall.
All of the pupils had a fantastic time; they participated very enthusiastically and asked some excellent questions. The afternoon was a great way to end Year Seven’s first Half term in English and it really brought to life some of the texts they have studied so far.
