A Celebration of The RGS Worcester Family of Schools
On Tuesday, pupils and staff from across The RGS Worcester Family of Schools came together in Worcester Cathedral for this year’s Commemoration Service. Pupils from RGS Worcester, RGS The Grange, RGS Springfield and RGS Dodderhill gathered to ‘cherish the past and look to the future’ of The Family of Schools.
The Service was led by The Revd. Canon Kimberly Bohan and included music and readings from pupils across all four Schools. The choirs of RGS Worcester and RGS Dodderhill gave moving performances of Ubi Caritas, Wherever You Are, You’ve Got a Friend and The Lord Bless You and Keep You.
We were delighted to welcome this year’s Guest of Honour, Mrs Laura Brown, Headmistress of RGS Springfield, who is retiring at the end of term. Mrs Brown gave a memorable address exploring the wisdom in fairy tales. Drawing links between classic stories and growing up, she encouraged pupils to see themselves as the heroes of their own journeys, reminding us all that courage, kindness and self-belief are what truly matter.
Pupils from each School made the Service special, with thoughtful readings and prayers from Year Six pupils at RGS The Grange and RGS Springfield, Lower School pupils from RGS Dodderhill and RGS Worcester, and Senior pupils from RGS Dodderhill. Their contributions reflected on the power of community and looking ahead with purpose.
Hymns including Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven, I Vow to Thee, My Country and Jerusalem were sung with enthusiasm and unity concluding with a blessing from The Revd. Canon Bohan.
Executive Headmaster Mr John Pitt said, “The Commemoration Service is an important event because it is an opportunity to come together, celebrate our long history and also reflect upon our School community. Most independent schools have a Founder’s service but RGS Worcester is so old that we don’t know who our original Founder was, so we celebrate all of our Founders and Benefactors over time. We all really enjoyed Mrs Brown’s Address which reminded us of life’s journey and brought back memories of many stories and fairytales. Thank you to our readers, the pupils who performed in the choirs and our Governors, staff, parents and pupils for attending and filling the Cathedral. It is always a very proud moment for me as Headmaster when we hold this wonderful service.”
We are grateful to the Dean and Chapter of Worcester Cathedral for once again welcoming us, and to all those across The Family of Schools who helped bring the Service to life.
