Allen Cup Match Rounds off a Superb Week of Cricket
The highlight of a busy week of Cricket was Sunday’s fiercely contested Cricket Cup Match, as the Boys’ 1st XI took on the Alumni XI, competing for the Allen Cup. This trophy, kindly donated by the Allen family, is now awarded annually for the Alumni fixture. This time, both Luke and Ben Allen were playing, while James Allen kindly umpired for the match.
The game proved to be extremely exciting as both teams showed batting expertise on a dry wicket. Chasing a well-constructed innings of 249 in 40 overs by the Alumni XI, the current 1st XI battled hard and came within touching distance, falling just 10 runs short in a thrilling finish. Freddie Ammonds was the standout performer, achieving a magnificent 123 which included a flurry of 6s at the end to keep his team in contention. His wicket proved the team’s downfall though, and the Alumni XI held their nerve to wrestle the Cup back from the School this year. This friendly event was rounded off with a prize-giving and celebration together of RGS Cricket.
Thank you to the Allen family who all attended the match, and to the Alumni XI for returning to Flagge Meadow and for demonstrating their Cricketing skills once again.
Earlier in the week, the 1st XI secured their place in Round 3 of the National T20 competition with a commanding victory over Old Swinford Hospital School. George Heywood scored a magnificent 113 runs and Captain Tom Odell took 5 wickets for 14 runs; both will be recorded on the boards in the pavilion. They are playing their next fixture against Princethorpe School as we publish the RGS Times today. The Girls’ 1st XI faced King’s School Worcester in the National 100-ball Cup; although narrowly defeated, they progress to the Plate competition and will play Trent College in the preliminary round.
Saturday’s full block of fixtures against Solihull School saw RGS record six wins and four losses, with standout individual performances across the board. George Hallam scored his maiden Century for the 1st XI, while Anya Peddareddy set a new School record for the girls with an unbeaten 97 for the Under 15A team. Other key contributions included Cory Crowther-Green (59 runs for the Under 12A team), Ollie Oates (77 not out for the U12B team), Seb Steadman (5 wickets for 29 runs for the Under 13A team), Daniel Laugharne (68 runs for the Under 14A team) and Rapha Rae (68 not out for the Under 15A team), the last two pupils playing for the age group above.
It was a superb week of Cricket for RGS, with individual brilliance and strong team performances across the age groups.
