Football Stars at RGS
We are pleased to share the achievements of several budding Football stars at RGS. From securing contracts with prestigious clubs to earning call-ups to national camps and trials, our pupils are excelling on the pitch. Below is a summary of recent achievements by RGS pupils.
Year Seven Pupil Offered Contract with Birmingham City
Year Seven pupil, Oscar Greenwood has returned from St Andrews having been offered a new two-year contract with Birmingham City for the Under 13s and Under 14s upcoming seasons.
Oscar signed for Birmingham City when he was eight years old as an Under 9. He has been very fortunate to have many incredible Football experiences with the club, playing at all the top-level academies throughout the country. Oscar trains in Birmingham between 4-5 times a week and travels around the country for matches at weekends.
Oscar said, “I am really happy to get this new contract and to have the continued opportunity to play for the Blues”.
Oscar has also enjoyed trying new sports since starting at RGS – in particular Rugby and Athletics, and he enjoys representing and competing for RGS in all sports, including in Football. We wish Oscar every success in his upcoming fixtures and training with Birmingham City.
Year Ten Pupils Excel at England Men’s Goalkeeper Camp
Year Ten pupils Theo Houston and Maxwell Moses both received call ups to a four day England Men’s Goalkeeper camp over the Easter holidays. The pair trained at the impressive St George’s Park England training base along with fourteen other goalkeepers across the Under 14 to Under 16 age category. The boys, who play their club football for Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion respectively, were put through their paces by the England coaches with twice daily intensive coaching sessions. They also enjoyed a visit from former England goalkeeping legend, David Seaman, who talked to the players about his life and career as a professional footballer and also took the boys onto the grass for a coaching session.
About this encounter, Theo commented, “It was a great privilege to meet and train with one of the best goalkeepers ever to play for England. He has such a lot of knowledge to pass on and he was really easy to talk to about his career and the challenges he faced making it to the top of the game.”
Theo’s next stop is an International tour to Athens with Aston Villa in April, followed by a National ISFA Under 15 match in May.
About his experience at the England Camp, Maxwell said: “I felt really honoured to be invited back to the England Camp once again. I am so grateful for the opportunity and will continue to work hard”.
Maxwell has recently returned from a week on tour in France with West Bromwich Albion. They finished 8th out of 24 teams in a competition, with Maxwell pulling off some great saves, including a triple save and a few fantastic all-round match performances. Maxwell was selected to be Captain of the team for the tour. He has also been asked to represent ISFA Under 15s against Manchester United.
We wish Theo and Maxwell all the best in their upcoming fixtures and are delighted to hear that they are both continuing to excel in a sport they are so passionate about.
Year Eight Pupils representing the Midlands at England ISFA trials
Five Year Eight boys recently travelled to Shrewsbury to represent the Midlands ISFA team, as part of the England ISFA trials. The Year Eight pupils were Max Pearce, Archie Wood, Hardy Brown, Ben and Fraser Rusling.
They had a busy three days – playing eight games across Saturday, Sunday and Monday against regional ISFA teams from across England, and also took part in other fun activities arranged such as swimming and a quiz. They all really enjoyed the experience, staying on-site at Shrewsbury School for three days for the competition. They also made some great new friends and fantastic memories over the weekend.
Since attending the England ISFA trials Max Pearce has also been selected to represent the ISFA at the National Under 14 level next season. Congratulations to all involved in the trials and for making the most of the opportunity and for representing RGS so well. We look forward to hearing more exciting updates.
