RGS Alumnus Forges Tradition
It is always a pleasure to receive updates about former RGS pupils and we were delighted to hear from 2018 leaver Guy Milton who now works as a Blacksmith. Guy’s journey from student to accomplished blacksmith, alongside his part-time business partner Joshua Fincher, highlights the invaluable support and guidance provided by the RGS Design and Technology Department.
Recently, Guy and Joshua undertook a prestigious commission: crafting the new Quit Rent knives for the Ceremony of the Rendering of the Quit Rents to the Crown by the City of London Corporation. This centuries-old tradition, held at the Royal Courts of Justice, holds a special place in British heritage, symbolising service in lieu of rent for historic lands.
The intricate process involves presenting a blunt knife and a sharp knife to officials, who then perform ceremonial actions to signify approval. Guy and Joshua meticulously designed and crafted these knives, ensuring they met the exacting standards of the occasion. With dedication and precision, they transformed raw materials into works of art, capturing the essence of tradition while incorporating modern elements.
The significance of their work didn’t go unnoticed. The Royal Courts of Justice graciously allowed Guy and his family to witness the knives and even arranged a setting reminiscent of the Quit Rent ceremony, providing a memorable experience.
The journey of crafting these knives was a collaborative effort, with Guy and Joshua leveraging their skills and the support they received from the RGS Design and Technology Department. From encouragement during Guy’s school days to ongoing advice and assistance, the Department played a pivotal role in his success. Notably, they contributed to the creation of a stunning presentation box, showcasing the Corporation of London’s coat of arms with finesse.
As Guy reflects on his achievements, he extends his heartfelt gratitude to the Design and Technology Department for nurturing his passion and for guiding him.
Congratulations to Guy and Joshua for their remarkable and unique achievement!
