Promoting traditional Rugby values

Rugby promises to provide every pupil at RGS with the opportunity to maximise their potential in a dynamic and fun learning environment. We are committed to coaching four technical skills that make up our ‘RGS Identity’. Our focus on the technical aspects of catch and pass, ball presentation, low tackles, and awareness builds to our aim of playing an attractive and enjoyable brand of rugby.

RGS Worcester is proud to be able to provide multiple team fixtures across all age groups. With training and home fixtures played at our historical Flagge Meadow playing fields, we believe in promoting traditional rugby values as well as our own Charter for Sport values, to be ‘Resilient, Gracious, Selfless and Willing’.

Mr Taylor is a former England Under 20 international and a 2016 Junior World Cup champion, having scored in the final.

Mr Allsopp complements the team with his versatility and breadth of playing experience. Mr Allsopp has transitioned into coaching with a passion for developing young talent and promoting excellence in the sport.

Girls’ Team and Rugby Sevens

RGS offer Senior Girls’ Rugby, which is proving very popular, so popular that we have entered teams into the National Rosslyn Park Sevens Tournament, where the Girls made the National Plate Quarter Finals in 2022 and in 2023 qualified for the second day at the prestigious tournament.

Rugby Sevens has become a real focus for RGS as the fixture list has grown throughout the year. The skills required for the game sit well with our RGS values and principles and also help ensure that fitness levels remain high in preparation for pre-season training.

Rugby Philosophies

There are two philosophies that drive Rugby Provision at the School:  ‘Mini-to-Modus’ and ‘Modus-to-Mini.

Mini-to-Modus

RGSW has a distinct player pathway from our Prep Schools through to the Senior School rugby. At each stage, every player is developed through skill and game-based delivery, with the ultimate goal of giving pupils an opportunity to play in our Modus Cup. This is a unique opportunity to play at Sixways Stadium, where supporters attend in their thousands to cheer on the team in what is a special experience for all those involved.

Modus-to-Mini

A pathway is also encouraged from the Senior School down through to our Prep Schools, where our 1st XV Rugby students are expected to be role models for the younger years, offering superb support and guidance on and off the field of play.

With close links to the professional game in the English Premiership and Guinness Pro 14, there are opportunities for aspiring young rugby players to forge their way into Elite Academies. RGS Worcester has a rich history of producing Academy Players for the Worcester Warriors, and alumni include Jonny Arr, who is the highest-capped Worcester Warriors player to date, and most recently, Loïc Keasey, who has represented England Under 18 in South Africa. These players are supported tremendously by our Athlete Development Programme, which offers strength and conditioning, individualisation and specialisation, as well as mentoring by one of our elite Coaching Staff.
