Year Ten Entertain at Teatime Concert
We were delighted to welcome guests to Perrins Hall last week to be entertained by Year Ten Musicians, performing at the Teatime Concert.
With an impressive seventeen performances from pupils on a variety of instruments, the concert was opened by a self-organised wind quintet arrangement of Somewhere Over The Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz, played by flautists Elizabeth Crookall, Olivia Hodgson, Charli Barlow playing the oboe, Sophie Jackson playing saxophone and Zara Martin-green playing the bassoon.
Mitilda Santhosh followed with a delicate rendition of Lin-Manual Miranda’s Burn from Hamilton, with Ben Fisher the next performance, and the first soloist to take to the stage, playing Mazurka in G minor, Op.67 No.2 by Chopin. Jack Hay’s performance of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust on the drums was confident and powerful, as was Annabelle Howarth playing the complex Schumann’s The Two Grenadiers on ‘cello with ease and control.
Charlotte Hird followed by singing I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables, and the dream theme continued with Michael Lui next performing In Dreams from The Lords of the Rings. Similarly in tone, Charli Barlow played In the Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg on clarinet. Lucas Reid next played Jay Ungar’s Ashokan Farewell on violin very beautifully, before Danny Hines took to the piano with a careful rendition of Burgmüller’s Arabesque.
Next it was my turn, playing an improvised version of Last, but not Least by James Rae on the saxophone, before Sophie Jackson sang Quiet from Matilda. Lottie Hutchins followed with her performance of Night by Einaudi on piano and then Charlotte Abbots took to the stage with her clarinet to play Fauré’s Pavaneon. Ivan Innocent upped the tempo playing Herbie Hancock’s Chameleon, before the penultimate performance of the afternoon from Isaac Chan, who played J S Bach’s Prelude No.16 in G minor in a carefully controlled performance. Our last performance of the afternoon was from Toby Alexander who ended the concert with the rousing Theme from Rhapsody in Blue by Gerswin on the cornet.
