Year Nine Shine at the Teatime Concert
Talented pupils entertained audiences at the Year Nine Teatime Concert in Perrins Hall on Monday. There was a very varied programme with a variety of styles and instruments, all performed by pupils with flourish and enthusiasm.
Ben Brierley confidently opened the concert with his piano performance of the very aptly named Opening Night Jazz by Martha Mier, followed by Daya Sanghera who played a haunting evocation of the sea for solo flute, Sea Echo by Sally Adams.
Kitty Hildred changed the tempo singing As If We Never Said Goodbye from Lloyd Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard with a well-delivered and theatrical performance. Natasha Lindsay followed by playing Cesar Cui’s Orientale from Kaleydoskop, Op.50 with beautiful rich tone on the oboe. Kieran Lilley brought Ill Wind by Mozart, Flanders and Swan very much to life by singing and acting out a story of a missing French horn in a rather comedic fashion, complete with props!
Abi Walter followed by playing Romantic Song from Three Pastiches by Cecilia McDowall on clarinet, ably accompanied by Sasha Penlington. Orla Hession-Wilson continued with a spirited and spritely interpretation of Dance Rustique by W H Squire on ‘cello.
Flautist Martha Colclough continued the entertainment playing Bourrée anglaise from Partita in A minor by J S Bach with style and fluency and Isabelle Jones sang Giordani’s Caro Mio Ben with strong legato and good poise.
To complete the concert, pianist Sasha Penlington treated the audience to Debussy’s Sarabande from Pour le Piano, playing with superb maturity and with great musical involvement.
Head of Year Nine, Mrs Sarah Leeds, said: “It was a pleasure to see so many of our talented Year Nine pupils perform at the Teatime Concert. The standard of musical accomplishment was outstanding, and it was a joy to watch them shine on stage. Congratulations to all the pupils on superb performances.”
