Rowers Showcase Determination at National and Metropolitan Regattas
RGS rowers demonstrated exceptional perseverance, adaptability and competitive spirit during a busy Half term of racing at two prestigious events, the National Schools’ Regatta and the Metropolitan Regatta.
The National Schools’ Regatta began with a sudden change of schedule as adverse weather led organisers to condense the usual two-day programme into a single day. Although this meant that the girls’ double sculls crews were unable to race, the Open J18 quad of Matthew Ferris, Zach Jew, Freddie Fielding and Jacob Hartley, alongside Dan Foster in the J18 single scull, stepped up to the challenge in the time trials. While they narrowly missed out on progressing to the finals, their commitment and resilience in representing RGS at one of the UK’s most competitive junior rowing events was commendable.
Determined to maintain momentum, Olivia Hodgson and Lucy Whiteley competed the following weekend at the Metropolitan Regatta at Dorney Lake, an event known for attracting top senior crews. With no junior doubles category available, Olivia and Lucy took on the challenge of racing in the Championship Women’s Doubles. Against a strong field that included crews from the University of Reading, they produced a remarkable time trial performance, finishing sixth and securing a place in the A Final. They held their position in the final, crossing the line in sixth place. This is an outstanding achievement for a junior crew.
Adding to the spirit of the day, former RGS students Zara Povey and Menna Sutton chatted to the RGS coaches and told them of their recent successes. Zara had just claimed victory in the Women’s Championship Quad and is now preparing for Henley Women’s Regatta and GB trials, with the ambition of earning selection for the Under 23 national team. Menna celebrated reaching her first A Final, finishing in an impressive fourth place.
The two events highlighted the talent and resilience of our rowers past and present, as well as the strength of the RGS Rowing community. It was a proud week for all involved, with valuable experience gained and inspiring connections strengthened.
