RGS Worcester Students Excel in Prestigious Degree Apprenticeships
We were delighted with the excellent academic results in the summer which meant that over 90% of our pupils achieved their first choice University places. As they head off to their Universities, we wish them all the very best.
At the same time, some of our students have decided to pursue a different route through Apprenticeships and our award-winning Careers department and Sixth Form Team can support our students whichever route they choose.
Degree Apprenticeships have become an increasingly popular choice for students aiming to blend academic learning with practical work experience. These programmes offer the unique opportunity to work towards a full Undergraduate or Master’s degree while actively engaging in a professional role. Depending on the level of the course, Degree Apprenticeships typically span from three to six years. One of the significant advantages of this route is that the sponsoring company covers the tuition fees, providing a funded alternative to traditional University courses.
Lydia Jackson, Oliver Giles, Harry Standing, Archie Tompson and Georgie Wyeth secured offers for highly sought-after Degree Apprenticeship courses, demonstrating their dedication and determination through very rigorous selection processes.
Lydia Jackson’s impressive journey led her to secure a coveted place on a Degree Apprenticeship programme at RSM, a globally renowned Accountancy firm. The application process began last December and Lydia navigated her way through tests in Mathematics, English, and Verbal Reasoning, participated in virtual interviews, completed further assessments, and excelled in the final rounds of interviews.
Oliver Giles received an offer from Greenwood Projects for a Quantity Surveyor Apprenticeship. This opportunity aligns perfectly with his ambition to gain hands-on experience in an industry that heavily emphasises site visits. Looking ahead, Oliver envisions leveraging the skills and education gained through his time at RGS and his Degree Apprenticeship to explore independent ventures in the future.
Archie Tompson is immersed in a Chartered Surveying Degree Apprenticeship with Dalcour MacLaren. This five-year apprenticeship will give him the knowledge, experience and qualification needed to start a career as a rural chartered surveyor. An apprentice will get hands-on experience at one of the UK’s most successful firms in the utility and infrastructure sector, and work on various exciting projects such as HS2 and Heathrow 3rd runway.
Harry Standing is pursuing a Law Degree Apprenticeship with Gowling WLG in Birmingham. In April, Harry applied for a place on the solicitor apprenticeship (with Law Degree) scheme at Gowling. This is a seven-year apprenticeship working four days a week and studying one day a week for a Law degree and then taking the SQE (Solicitors Qualifying Exams), which takes six years to qualification if you do a Law degree or seven if you do a non-Law degree and conversion course. Out of the 150 applicants, Harry was assessed to be the stand out candidate!
Finally, Georgie Wyeth is excelling in a Degree Apprenticeship in Insurance at Crowe. Georgie will gain experience working both independently and as part of a team. Most of the trainees at Crowe study to obtain the ACA qualification provided by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), while others follow more tax or business solutions focused pathways.
The dedication to pursuing Higher Education while gaining invaluable professional experience is commendable, and we wish all of our Upper Sixth leavers every success. Along with our former students heading off to Universities, we look forward to hearing about their continued successes in the years ahead at our alumni reunions and events.
