Year Ten Explore First World War History
Last week, Year Ten History pupils went on a trip to deepen their understanding of the First World War, Year Ten pupil Heidi Porter shared the following report:
“We have been studying the First World War as part of our Medicine paper. We visited two cemeteries in Staffordshire, one for German soldiers and another primarily for New Zealanders. We learned that regardless of how, where, or what nationality they were, all soldiers were treated equally in death. We concluded our visit by laying a poppy wreath to honour the soldiers who gave their lives for the opportunities we have today.
Next, we visited a replica of the First World War trenches at the Royal Staffordshire Museum. This helped us learn about the illnesses and wounds suffered by soldiers, such as trench foot and trench fever, and other aspects of trench life we had studied. We saw a demonstration of the famous Thomas Splint and the evacuation route for the wounded, which was fascinating to see in practice after having studied them.
Overall, we had an amazing trip and loved being able to learn and see more about our First World War topic. It helped us better understand and respect the sacrifices and dangers the soldiers faced.”
