RGS Hosts Cross-Curricular Olympic Outreach Event
On Wednesday 5 June, RGS hosted a cross-curricular Olympic Games Outreach event, celebrating the core values of Olympism: excellence, respect, and friendship. These values form the foundation upon which the Olympic movement builds its activities to promote sport, culture, and education. Over time, these principles have evolved to encompass:
- Striving for excellence and encouraging individuals to reach their full potential
- Demonstrating respect in various forms: self-respect, respect for rules, opponents, the environment, and the public
- Celebrating friendship – a unique aspect of the Olympic Games, which brings people together from around the world every few years
Pupils from Flyford Flavell Primary School, Norton Juxta C of E Primary School, and Himbleton C of E Primary School participated in the event, rotating through a range of engaging activities. The Art Department hosted a creative workshop where pupils designed and made their own pictograms of their favourite Olympic sports and worked collaboratively to produce a large-scale collaged frieze.
The Computing and IT Department provided an interactive session on programming robots (Spheros!) to help pupils navigate a course in order to score a point! The emphasis was on developing coding skills, but most importantly collaborative, creative problem-solving alongside teamwork, leadership and communication.
The PE & Sports Department conducted an athletics session, where pupils enhanced their running, jumping, and throwing skills, culminating in exciting relay races. Year Ten Community Sports Leadership Award students supported the event, demonstrating the leadership abilities they have developed throughout the qualification they are studying.
We would like to thank the participating schools and everyone involved at RGS, and we look forward to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris this summer.
