RGS Gardening Club Strikes a Chord at RHS Spring Festival
A team of pupils from the RGS Gardening Club have once again risen to the challenge of crafting a garden for the School’s Garden Challenge at the RHS Spring Festival, Malvern. This year’s theme, ‘The Magic of Music: a song or musical to bring to life a garden and make your heart sing!’, inspired our pupils to base their design on the whimsical song ‘The Ugly Bug Ball’ by Burl Ives.
From the initial stages, the pupils took charge of the garden’s design, utilising a dedicated app to brainstorm and refine their ideas individually. Through collaborative efforts, these ideas were amalgamated into a cohesive plan. Even in the depths of winter, when outdoor cultivation was challenging, the pupils persevered, crafting decorative elements from recycled materials such as sunflowers to infuse the garden with colour and character.
At the heart of the garden stands a magnificent cello planter, adorned with musical notes, symbolising the fusion of art and nature. Recycled elements, including cans and repurposed instrument cases, emphasise the garden’s commitment to sustainability.
Integral to the garden’s message of environmental sustainability is the collaboration with ‘Bees for Development’, a charity dedicated to promoting beekeeping for sustainable livelihoods.
Year Seven pupil, Xanthe Carrington-Abraham commented, “It’s been so satisfying to see the appreciation for our hard work. We are proud of what we’ve achieved and really enjoy talking to people about our garden from design to finale.”
The gardeners can now take a well-deserved rest, hopefully enjoying their own garden with their garden creation on display throughout the weekend during the show for all to see. The pupils are a creative and enthusiastic group, who are a real credit to the school and their parents and were fantastic ambassadors for the school.
