Former Student Shines on International Fencing Stage
We are delighted to celebrate the exceptional Fencing achievements of former RGS student Lucas Hancock (OE, 2016-2022). Lucas has enjoyed an extraordinary year on the international Fencing stage.
In July, Lucas represented Northern Ireland at the Junior and Cadet Commonwealth Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand. Competing in the Junior Men’s Épée category against fencers from 11 countries, Lucas performed strongly in the Poules, securing a bye to the last 32. His journey concluded after a closely contested match against New Zealand’s top-ranked fencer, earning him an impressive 24th place overall. Reflecting on the experience, Lucas shared: “The whole competition was amazing… so many people from so many different countries… and there were some truly great fencers there!” The event saw England claim victory, with standout performances from South Africa, Australia, and India.
Lucas’s time in Christchurch captured the attention of New Zealand’s media, with a memorable image of him, exhausted but determined, featured in a trailer for a national television programme. His match against the New Zealand No.1 also received special coverage, highlighting his exceptional efforts on the international stage.
In November, Lucas achieved another milestone, being selected to represent the Senior Northern Ireland Épée team at the prestigious Five Nations competition in Derry. In a historic moment for Northern Ireland, Lucas and his teammates defeated England for the first time ever, before going on to secure the Men’s Épée title. Reflecting on this remarkable accomplishment, Lucas said: “I wasn’t expecting to be selected to represent Northern Ireland for the Senior Five Nations Épée competition, so when we beat England for the first time ever, and then went on to win the competition for the first time, it really was a fantastic experience.”
We are immensely proud of Lucas and celebrate his success as an inspiration to current fencers and the wider RGS Worcester community.
