Fencers Perform at the British Youth Championships Finals
We are pleased to share an overview of our fencers’ participation in the British Youth Championships National Age Group Finals at the England Institute of Sport in Sheffield over the bank holiday weekend, on 4-6 May.
Throughout the event, our fencers showcased remarkable determination and skill. Lower Sixth student Matthew Fallows competed in the Under 18 Boys Épée, securing a win in his pool and earning the 49th seed. Despite a close match in the first round of eliminations, Matthew finished 49th.
Lower Sixth student, Zara Martin-Green returned to competition in the Under 18 Girls Épée after a hiatus, winning two matches in her pool and finishing 18th overall.
Year Eight pupil Matilda Hawkins faced tough competition in the Under 14 Girls Épée, maintaining her seeded position of 59th.
Year Seven pupil Emily De Bono displayed endurance over the three-day event. Starting with Sabre on day one, she won two matches in her pool and finished 20th. Moving on to Foil on day two, Emily’s performance improved, securing three victories and finishing 13th. On the final day, she fenced in Épée, winning four matches in her pool and earning a 9th seed. She ultimately finished 7th overall and secured a British Youth Championships medal.
Year Ten pupil Issy Pottinger, fencing in the Under 16 Girls Épée, won three out of five fights in the pool, securing a 23rd seed and finishing as seeded.
Year Seven pupil Finn Bratchell, in the Under 12 Boys Épée category, faced initial challenges but showcased resilience, securing a stunning victory in the first round of eliminations and finishing 32nd overall.
Our fencers demonstrated commendable effort and sportsmanship throughout the championships, reflecting positively on our Fencing Programme.
In other Fencing news, Emily De Bono has been selected to be part of the England Under 14 Épée Squad in Lausanne next month. This is a fantastic opportunity, and we wish her the very best of luck!
