Drama Residential Showcases Creativity on the Coast
Last weekend, A Level Drama students travelled down to Cornwall for a residential trip. The weekend was joyous, filled with creativity, fun and laughter! Director of Drama, Mrs Jilly Witcomb shares the following report:
“Our trip began with a visit to the beautiful open-air Minack theatre with its breathtaking views and stunning architecture. Whilst walking around the site, we learnt of the historical depth of the theatre such as details about the original owners, Rowena and Billy, and the many productions put on there during its early years. It was a truly wonderful experience to gain an insight into the stunning site. This was promptly followed by a journey down to the beach for a paddle – and performance! By combining the methodologies of the practitioner Kneehigh and our text of ‘Lysistrata’ on the beach, we enjoyed devising a performance in the open air.
Our second day involved heading up to Plymouth to see an outstanding performance of ‘Bat Out Of Hell:The Musical’. The fantastic set, lighting, costume, sound and, of course, performance brought together this amazing production, which was a highlight of the trip for many of us. This did result in many renditions of Meatloaf and Steinman’s iconic soundtrack afterwards, much to my and Mr Garrity’s delight! We concluded our day watching Eurovision, which was the perfect way to unwind after such a busy day.
On our final day, we headed to Charlestown to continue our practical application of Kneehigh’s methodologies and our set text of ‘Lysistrata’. We produced a dramatic and certainly unique performance which included many laughs within the creative process, before returning to RGS. The trip was a chance to perform and be inspired by the productions we saw, as well as an opportunity to build upon friendships and enjoy the many beautiful sights of Cornwall.”
Thanks must go Mrs Witcomb and Mr Garrity for organising this residential trip. We hope that everyone had a fantastic time!
