DofE Participants Conquer the Elements and their Gold Award
On the morning of Friday 30 May, parents waved their children goodbye from Worcester Foregate Station. 18 Lower Sixth students were about to embark on a real adventure, travelling by train to Troon, Scotland, and then taking a ferry to the Isle of Arran. With all the possessions they would need on their backs, they were very much a sight to behold!
During the first evening at camp, all participants tasted (quite literally!) the Scottish legend that are midges! With the sun shining and not a breath of wind, these little critters set about making life that much harder! The students were divided into four expedition groups, with two groups starting their expeditions by sea kayaking for two days, while the other two groups walked. The plan was to swap around so that all would complete two days of each. Unfortunately, much of the planning had to be changed with significant weather systems causing havoc. Throughout the trip, winds were gusting between 35 and 60mph, there was heavy, prolonged rain and low cloud, which all caused further challenges.
Mr Jay and Mr Batchelder oversaw the walking groups, while Mr Holt and Miss Morris, alongside two external instructors, oversaw the sea kayaking. Each group in their own ways truly bonded on what turned out to be an amazing adventure. Walking groups travelled through some stunning, often completely deserted, Scottish wilderness with red deer and eagles for company. The kayakers battled with waves and still managed to see an otter and seals.
Throughout all the challenges, everyone worked hard to conquer the challenges before them. They showed remarkable grit, determination and resilience, creating lasting memories as they all successfully completed the expedition section of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards. Huge congratulations go to all students involved and to the four brave staff supporting and encouraging them along the way. The Headmaster awarded the staff DT-made medals in Staff Briefing on Monday to thank them for their commitment to the DofE cause!
