Careers Seminar Inspires Future Legal Minds
Before Half term, we had the privilege of welcoming Jill Roberts, a Senior Associate Chartered Legal Executive in Family Law from Thursfields Solicitors, to RGS Worcester. She led an engaging and insightful Careers Seminar on Careers in Law, offering students a comprehensive overview of the various paths within the legal profession.
Jill, who qualified as a Chartered Legal Executive in December 2012, brought with her over 14 years of experience in family law, having trained at firms in Worcester and London. Her journey included studying and training while working full-time.
During the Seminar, Jill provided an in-depth look at the different career paths available in law in the UK. She discussed the roles of solicitors and barristers, emphasising the different organisations that regulate them and the distinct functions they serve. Additionally, she shed light on alternative routes, such as becoming a legal executive, and outlined the educational requirements for each path.
The Seminar covered various legal specialisations, including commercial litigation, family law, and employment law. Jill emphasised the importance of practical skills in the legal profession, such as communication, time management, and problem-solving. She encouraged students to gain experience through work experience days, volunteering, and part-time jobs to develop these valuable skills.
Jill and a Sixth Form student also discussed the impact of technology on the legal profession, particularly the potential for AI to augment but not replace human legal professionals. They highlighted how technology is shaping the industry and the importance of adapting to these changes while maintaining the human touch that is crucial in legal practice.
Throughout her presentation, Jill provided insights into the daily tasks of a lawyer, including drafting letters and documents, reading information, and meeting with clients. She also touched on non-chargeable work such as business development and compliance, stressing the importance of time management and organisation within a law firm.
The Seminar concluded with Jill discussing the factors to consider when choosing a legal specialisation, such as personality, skill set, and interests. She shared her own passion for helping clients through difficult times and finding creative solutions to their legal issues, inspiring students to reflect on what drives their interest in law.
The Careers Seminar offered pupils valuable insights into the legal profession and the various paths they can pursue. We extend our thanks to Jill Roberts for her time and expertise, and we look forward to seeing our pupils explore future legal careers.
