Award-Winning Performances at Worcester Competitive Arts Festival
RGS once again played host to the Worcester Competitive Arts Festival (WCAF), welcoming hundreds of talented performers and their families over three weekends in March. The Music Room, Perrins Hall, and Main Hall were transformed into vibrant performance spaces, showcasing a diverse range of musical and dramatic talent. Founded in 1951, the Festival provides amateur performers of all ages with the opportunity to compete in a friendly and supportive setting, with winners awarded cups, medals, and trophies, as well as invitations to perform at the Festival Concert.
This year, RGS musicians and performers excelled across a variety of categories. Notable solo successes included Year Nine pupils Finlay Hilton, who won the Jasminka Koracevik Cup for Open Class for Bowed String Solo, and Lexie Small, who claimed The Perrystone Cup for Intermediate Bowed String Solo. Lower Sixth student Kieran Lilley secured first place in the Year Twelve Musical Theatre Class and second in the Open Musical Theatre Class, while Year Eight pupil Caroline Foster impressed by winning both the Solo Acting and Solo Acting Comedy Drama Open categories. Year Eight pupil Harry Edwards also achieved a silver award in the prestigious Sproule Prize and Trophy for Speech, Drama, and Music for participants up to fifteen years old.
RGS ensembles demonstrated outstanding teamwork and musicianship, with the Flute Ensemble winning the Woodwind Ensemble category, Intermediate Strings securing victory in the String Ensemble competition, and the String Quartet excelling in the Small Ensemble category. The RGS a cappella group, “Dashing Musical Chaps” (DMCs), triumphed in the Small Choirs category, while “Noodle Soup” showcased their talent in the Rock and Pop Group Covers section.
Congratulations to all RGS performers who contributed to this year’s Festival, achieving remarkable success across a wide range of musical and dramatic styles. All who participated should be incredibly proud!
