A Week of Linguistic Adventures at RGS
Every year on 26 September, schools across Europe mark the European Day of Languages, celebrating the 225 languages spoken across the continent. At RGS Worcester, this annual occasion is extended into a week-long celebration, giving pupils the chance to immerse themselves in the richness of languages and cultures from around the world.
This year’s European Week of Languages offered a wide variety of exciting activities for pupils across the school. House spirit was tested in a lively game of pétanque, as teams battled it out to send their opponents’ boules flying. Today, the Dining Hall was transformed with a European-themed menu, where pupils sampled continental favourites including pizza, pommes frites and sauerkraut. Adding an international twist, the pupils also enjoyed the chance to learn some Japanese greetings and discover more about the country’s fascinating culture.
The Italian Club gave pupils a taste of ‘la dolce vita’, while pupils in Years Eight and Nine took part in a unique translation challenge designed to test their linguistic skills in the style of GCHQ. Across all Tutor groups, pupils explored idioms and memes from French, German and Spanish, working together to uncover the meanings behind colourful sayings and cultural jokes.
The week was a wonderful celebration of language learning at RGS Worcester, encouraging pupils to see the fun, creativity and cultural insight that language study brings. A huge thank you goes to all staff and pupils who contributed to making European Week of Languages such a success and particularly to the Modern Languages Faculty for leading the way.
