A Super Saturday of Sport
Last week saw an exceptional series of performances from RGS Worcester’s 1st teams, with victories in Rugby, Hockey, Netball, and Football.
Rugby
RGS Rugby teams delivered a strong showing last weekend, with Middle and Senior School squads competing against King Edward VI School (KES) Stratford. The Under 14 A and B teams extended their unbeaten runs this season to an impressive 14 wins in 14 matches, demonstrating consistency and dominance. The Under 15s also shone, building on last year’s narrow single-score win to claim a commanding 38-10 victory under the guidance of new Professional Rugby Coach, Mr Gemmell.
The 2nd XV continued to impress with their dynamic and creative play, spearheaded by Captains Luca Raina and Lucas Bray and celebrated a series of well-executed tries. The 1st XV rounded off a successful weekend with an excellent comeback, overturning a 7-5 half time deficit to secure a resounding 46-14 win. Key performances from back-row Monty Jones and a sharp, cohesive backline were instrumental in this dominant display.
Mr Robert Lewis, Head of Rugby
Hockey
This week, RGS hosted a County Indoor Under 18 Hockey competition, welcoming King’s High Warwick and Malvern College. With a draw and a win, the RGS team emerged as County Champions, securing their place in the Regional Finals at Repton School next week.
Saturday’s block fixture against King’s High Warwick featured no fewer than eight teams in action. The Under 18s delivered a commanding 7-0 victory at home, preserving their unbeaten record at the Worcester International Hockey Centre. This result serves as excellent preparation for the next round of the England Hockey Cup, postponed last week due to icy conditions but rescheduled for next week.
Adding to the week’s successes, Year Six pupils from RGS The Grange triumphed at the IAPS National Hockey Finals last Friday, earning the title of National Champions!
Miss Sally Walton OLY, Head of Hockey and Head of the Athlete Development Programme
Football
Matches against Clifton College historically have always been competitive. Saturday’s contest was no different and remained nervously close until the last minutes. Our overall performance, however, was excellent right from the start. We imposed our style of play and continually created chances until we secured the winning goal and saw out the match in increasingly difficult weather conditions.
Mr Gary Leeds, Head of Football
Netball
The Under 14s gave a valiant effort in the county semi final, narrowly missing out on the final by just one goal—a tough loss but a testament to their determination. They progressed into the next round of the plate competition by dominating their plate game against Cleeve School with an emphatic 36-15 victory.
The Under 16s were unstoppable in the district tournament, storming through the pool games to claim first place. They had a solid County tournament, winning all pool games convincingly but just missing out on the final with a loss to Bromsgrove School in the semi final.
Meanwhile, the Seniors showcased their strength and teamwork with two wins this week. Playing against Cheltenham Ladies College on Saturday, the 1st team won 26-20, and the 2nd team won 29-26. On Tuesday, the Senior 1st team dominated in their plate match against Oakham School, securing a solid 32-21 win to advance to the quarter finals. Overall, it was a week of growth, grit, and exciting victories!
Miss Rebecca Gwilliam, Head of Netball
