A Memorable Week of Sunshine, Adventure and Shared Experiences in Spain
The Lower School visit to Barcelona during the summer holiday began with a very early start, which was a challenge at the end of a busy term. Nevertheless, pupils arrived full of anticipation and excitement for the week ahead. A successful flight, complete with an amusing pilot who kept everyone entertained over the tannoy, set the tone for the days to come. On arrival in Barcelona, and after a 90-minute wait at passport control, local guides were ready to welcome the group and ensure everything ran smoothly for the days ahead.
The hotel proved an ideal base, situated just a short stroll from both the beach and the main promenade. Pupils wasted no time settling in: within minutes of dropping off their bags, many were already performing acrobatics in the hotel pool. That evening, after a gentle walk around the local area, an early night was welcomed in preparation for the busy schedule ahead.
Each day began with a hearty buffet breakfast – chips included, before heading out to explore. A highlight was the full day in Barcelona, where pupils marvelled at the architectural beauty of the Sagrada Familia, enjoyed a boat trip along the coast with stunning views of the city and rounded off the afternoon with a stroll through the colourful mosaic designs of Park Güell. Tired but happy, the group returned to the hotel for dinner before an early night.
The following day’s plans brought an unexpected twist. A fascinating trip to Tarragona gave pupils insight into ancient Roman archaeology, including impressive arenas and ruins. However, the afternoon’s watersports were interrupted when storm warnings flashed across every device, followed by ominous dark clouds, thunder and lightning. A few shouts and shattered mugs later, the storm passed without incident, and pupils were soon back in the hotel pool, making the most of the sunshine’s return.
The calmer weather continued as the group spent a relaxing afternoon at the beach. Pupils and staff alike enjoyed the warm waters of the Mediterranean, while some teachers sampled the local delicacies at nearby cafés. That evening brought the chance to explore Salou by night, with pupils enthusiastically purchasing souvenirs and the kind of bright T-shirts unlikely to be seen on the next school mufti day!
Sunday provided perhaps the biggest thrill of all: a full day at PortAventura theme park. With its towering rollercoasters and exhilarating rides, there was something for everyone. Teachers, initially hesitant, soon became keen participants, rediscovering their inner thrill-seekers alongside the pupils. Despite tired legs, there was still energy for one last evening stroll and a final flurry of souvenir shopping before the journey home.
On the final day, there was time for one last dip in the pool and a relaxed lunch before the group made their way to the airport. A seamless return flight brought them back to eager parents at The Grange, refreshed from a few days’ respite, I’m sure, but ready to hear all about the week’s adventures.
Overall, the trip was a great success: full of laughter, discovery, shared experiences and lasting memories that will stay with pupils and staff alike.
