Herefordshire and Worcestershire Squash County Champion
Year Eight pupil, Freddie Staiano, won the boys Under 13 Herefordshire and Worcestershire Squash County Championship tournament on Saturday in Stourbridge.
Following his Under 13 County success, he is now hoping to be selected to play for the Worcestershire Under 15 Inter-County Team.
Freddie started playing Squash locally at Barnt Green Sports Club, at just five years of age. He has represented Worcestershire in tournaments in Sheffield and Gloucestershire in the past for the Under 11 teams and competes regularly. Earlier this year he won the Barnt Green Sports Club Under 13 Championship and gained runner up position in the Under 15 category.
Freddie is very dedicated to his sport, usually training 3 times a week, as he aims to represent Worcestershire in forthcoming Under 15 Championships. This summer he played in a glass court at New Street station prior to the Commonwealth Games to publicly support and raise the profile of Squash. This was followed by watching an inspiring Silver Medal win at the Games, by British player Joel Makin.
Freddie said: “Consistency is key to fitness and training. I used to feel really anxious about taking part in tournaments when I was younger, especially when I lost a game, but the more you do the easier it gets. I have learned that it is really important to have a good mindset and to keep calm under pressure. Representing Worcestershire in a team is great fun, I would encourage others to have a go”.
