Fencing For Success Across the Country
It has been a busy and successful few weeks for RGS fencers, with pupils travelling across the country to compete in some of the most competitive events on the British Fencing calendar. From senior championships to youth finals, our pupils have represented the School with skill, determination, and impressive results.
On Saturday 12 April, Emily De Bono travelled to London for the Elite Épée competition, where she achieved an impressive 3rd place finish in the Under 14 Girls’ category. The following weekend, on Saturday 19 April, Issy Pottinger competed in the Birmingham International, one of the largest and most competitive adult open events on the British Fencing circuit. Issy held her own among a strong field, finishing 79th in the Women’s Épée. She was back in action again on Saturday 26 April at the British Senior Championships in Sheffield, where she improved her national standing with a 52nd place finish in the Women’s Épée.
The momentum carried through into the British Youth Championships, which took place over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend at the England Institute of Sport in Sheffield. With a record number of participants, this year’s event was the largest British Youth Championships to date.
On Saturday, Joseph Kington fenced in the Under 18 Boys’ Épée, finishing 23rd, while Emily De Bono continued her run of strong performances by finishing 21st in the Under 14 Girls’ Épée. Emily returned on Sunday to compete in the Under 14 Girls’ Foil, placing 35th, and once again on Monday, this time in the Under 14 Girls’ Sabre, where she finished 38th. Meanwhile, Issy Pottinger fenced in the Under 16 Girls’ Épée on Sunday, securing a commendable 17th place.
Congratulations to all of our fencers for their determination, versatility, and consistent performances.
