Navigating the Mind with Careers in Psychology
Dr Selina Balloo, a Clinical Psychologist from Birmingham Children’s Hospital, delivered an insightful Careers Talk, sharing her journey into Clinical and Paediatric Neuropsychology for A Level Psychology students.
After completing a Psychology degree and an MSc in Clinical Psychology, Dr Balloo gained valuable experience as a voluntary assistant Psychologist before securing a role with CAMHS. She then undertook a six-year Clinical Psychology doctorate, which included multiple placements, and a diploma in Paediatric Neuropsychology.
Dr Balloo explained her role at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where she works as one of 35 Psychologists across departments such as oncology, cardiology, burns, diabetes, and neurology. Dr Balloo explained she specialises in epilepsy, detailing the challenges faced by young patients, including missed school, cognitive fatigue, social anxiety, and sleep difficulties. The impact of medication and seizures on overall wellbeing was also discussed. A key part of her role involves working in epilepsy surgery, where she is part of a multidisciplinary team. Pre-surgery, Dr Balloo assesses memory, visual, verbal, and motor skills to help localise seizure activity and predict post-surgery outcomes. She emphasised the importance of considering the patient’s psychological functioning and family dynamics.
Dr Balloo ended the presentation with a case study of ‘Tim’ who was diagnosed with epilepsy aged 11 years. After surgery to remove a lesion, he became seizure-free, his memory and energy improved, and he was able to reduce his medication. This case highlighted the life-changing impact of neuropsychological support in epilepsy surgery and the rewarding nature of her work in the hospital.
Mrs Charlotte Skipp, Head of Psychology said: “Psychology remains a popular subject at A-Level, opening doors to various career opportunities. Dr Balloo’s talk provided valuable insight into how psychology can lead to careers within the medical profession. It highlighted important links between the neuropsychology elements of the course and their practical applications, allowing students to see theory in action.”
Psychology is a popular A Level choice among Sixth Form students at RGS. Students develop skills in statistical analysis, application and evaluation on this dynamic and exciting course. They enjoyed attending the talk and thanked Dr Balloo for explaining how she uses her knowledge of Psychology directly in her career.
