Curriculum and GCSE Pathways

At RGS Dodderhill, the curriculum is carefully designed to support girls as they grow in confidence, independence, and academic maturity. From the early senior years through to GCSE, learning builds progressively, allowing each pupil to develop strong foundations before shaping a pathway that reflects their strengths, interests, and ambitions.

As girls move through the school, they are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their learning, supported by close guidance, small class teaching, and a clear academic structure.

Years 5 to 8

In Years 5 to 8, girls follow a broad and balanced curriculum that develops core academic skills while encouraging curiosity, creativity, and independent thinking. Learning focuses on:

  • Secure foundations in English, Mathematics and Science
  • Humanities and languages that build global awareness and analytical thinking
  • Creative and practical subjects that develop imagination and applied skills
  • Digital learning that builds confidence with technology and research
  • Oracy, presentation and discussion to strengthen communication and self-belief

Small class teaching allows teachers to challenge and support each pupil individually, preparing girls well for the increasing independence of GCSE study.

Years 9 to 11

From Year 9, girls begin GCSE study and shape a personalised programme built around their interests and academic goals.

Every pupil follows a strong academic core alongside carefully chosen option subjects, ensuring a balanced and rigorous programme that allows both breadth and depth.

Unlike many schools, option choices are not restricted by narrow blocks. This allows girls to combine subjects freely across disciplines, creating a genuinely personalised academic pathway that reflects individual strengths and aspirations.

Careful guidance and individual conversations support girls in making confident, well-informed decisions about their GCSE choices.
