Stellar Rowers
RGS Worcester’s J16 rowing squad have helped prove the theory that sporting talent and academic success go hand-in-hand with a huge crop of A*- A grades in their GCSEs.
Seven rowers who have trained and competed right through their GCSE exams are celebrating after scoring a stunning 37 A* and 20 A grades in their GCSE exams. In fact, 12.7% of the 291 A* grades this year were earned by our hard-working rowers.
The talented sporting brains are Lauren Rogers (9 A*), Ben Thomson (8 A*, 2 A), Harry Gemmill (7 A*, 2 A), Hannah Goldney (4 A*, 4 A) and Ashley Nock, Joe Essery and Harry Miers (3 A*s each and 10 As between them).
Head of Rowing, Jane Sullivan, commented: “I have been very impressed by how these rowers have managed their time – and I believe that is the key to balancing sport and academic work. Our performance squad rowers train six to eight times a week; they have to be super-organised about homework and revision. If you aren’t focused or you let your revision timetable slip then you will not be able to cope with the demands of sport.”
“The rowing regatta season peaks during May and June so it is vital that rowers learn to manage their time so that they can compete in the events they have trained for all year.”

Our gap year rowing coach, and ex-RGS Worcester Sixth Former, Liam Tustin, has won Henley Royal Regatta. Liam, who has spent this year coaching Games sessions for our J14-18 rowers, rows for Molesey Boat Club. Liam was selected as the steersman in the coxless four, which beat Tideway Scullers in the final of the Wyfold Challenge Cup after five days of racing. The achievement at the age of 19 comes just a year after he represented Great Britain at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Hamburg, where he came fourth in the eight.
