Silver Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition
On Thursday 14 March, the DofE Silver Team left RGS for two days to go on their practice expedition in the Long Mynd.
Whilst the weather was mostly dry during the two days of walking, the temperatures were low, 4 degrees, and the wind was strong, 40mph on average and 60mph gusts according to the weather station. Despite the challenging weather conditions, all pupils demonstrated resilience and great team working skills in order to complete their expedition successfully. Conversation with the leaders and careful preparation meant that all pupils were able to complete the expedition successfully and in a timely manner. Along their routes, which averaged 15 km (9 miles), pupils discovered the Carding Mill Valley which leads to the beautiful heather-carpeted plateau which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Whilst it was difficult to appreciate fully the far-reaching views from the top of the hill, we hope to return there next year for our follow-up practice expedition. In the meantime, the teams are looking forward to their assessment expedition at the end of June in the Peak District, near Bakewell.
