Regional Hockey
The Under 14s Midlands Regional Tournament was held at Rugby School last week. The girls took on the hosts in their first game. Lucy Hawkes and Sophie Thompson scored three goals and with great play from Grace Francis and Lizzie Rhoden, RGS won the game 3-1. The whole team performed well against a strong opposition.
Lucy Hawkes went on to score a hattrick against Leicester Grammar School. Sophie scored two more goals and Issy Nott one, and the side won comfortably (6-0).
The final group game was against Trent College, who had also won both their previous games. Both teams were already through to the semi final but this result determined whether RGS played Repton or Bromsgrove in the next round. A hard fought game with some consistent defending, but not quite the usual flair upfront, led to a 0-0 draw. RGS won the group on goal difference and next faced Bromsgrove in the semi final.
The team fought hard against a strong Bromsgrove side and the final result of 1-1 meant that the game had to go to penalties. Sophie, Lottie Atkinson, Issy Nott, Jemma Moseley and Lucy Hawkes all scored and a 3-3 draw meant a second round of sudden death, which Bromsgove won on their second flick.
A disappointing end to a day where the girls showed great quality which will give them success at this level in the future.
Thanks to Mr Rogers for umpiring and coaching throughout the day.
