Operation: Win Debate
The mission was simple: to beat King’s with minimal losses. Twelve members of the Year Seven and Year Eight Debating Society joined by Miss Waller, Mrs Davis and myself (Quinlan Hughes) did just that.
On Tuesday, four teams of three debaters each set off to King’s with high spirits and went into battle. The motion was ‘This House believes that the Internet makes us stupid’ with our team being the righteous proposition and King’s being the opposition. Our teams knew exactly what to say for their respective debates.
Our first speaker, Tess Rabjohn, opened the debate by talking about how the Internet makes us lazy and less creative. King’s replied but our second speaker, Joseph Dawes, made some excellent rebuttal points bringing up the distractive nature of the Internet and the dangers of cyber-bullying. King’s again fought back but we ended with an excellent summary from Zain Baig. This team effort won us this debate and we were further boosted by two more victories, making the final score 3 -1 to RGS.
Thank you to our hosts at King’s for a fantastic afternoon of debating. We are already looking forward to next year’s re-match!
