Hockey Project News
A significant milestone for one of the School’s new and exciting projects has been achieved this week. The Planning Application for two international standard Hockey pitches has been submitted to Worcester City Council (WCC). The School and Worcester Hockey Club have been working closely with local residents as part of the Planning Application process.
This project, which sees the School working in partnership with Worcester Hockey Club and Worcester City Council, is seeking to deliver a truly top-class facility for all four RGSW schools and will provide a home for Worcester Hockey Club. This exceptional facility will also be available for community use and will provide a Hockey Centre of which Worcester can be justifiably proud.
The Hockey facility will help develop Boys’ Hockey alongside the already highly successful Girls’ Hockey provision at RGSW. This will complement the existing wide-range of sports available for boys and girls at our schools.
The Press Release for the Planning Application is included below and the full application will shortly be available to view on the Worcester City Council Planning Portal. We will, of course, keep the RGSW community informed of progress with the project in the months ahead.
Press Statement October 2019
Worcester Hockey Club (WHC) and RGS Worcester (RGSW) are delighted to report that the planning application for the new Worcester Hockey Centre has been submitted to Worcester City Council.
If planning permission is granted the proposals will deliver a stunning new home for Hockey in Worcester, which will enable anyone interested in playing hockey, regardless of age, ability, disability, or background to play on international standard water-based pitches.
We are extremely grateful to the local Residents for their overwhelmingly supportive and constructive input into the final design and we look forward to continuing to work with them.
The proposals will ensure Residents’ past issues of unregulated parking and anti-social behaviour associated with the site will cease and we will remove the existing uncontrolled flood lighting, visible from homes opposite, in favour of a ‘state-of-the-art’ screened lighting scheme which will leave no light spill outside of the site.
The Old Porcelain Ground has a long and proud history of community and recreational sport. Our proposals intend to celebrate and continue that tradition, including returning a sports pavilion in its original location, with a low-profile timber clad design so it nestles within a landscape surrounded by trees and hedges. These are all being retained and improved with new planting of native species.
If we are granted planning permission at the Planning Committee on 23 January 2020, our intention would be to start work on site in March 2020, with the view to having pitches ready to play on from September 2020; in time for the new season.
WHC and RGSW have undertaken extensive pre-application consultation with a range of relevant groups and bodies prior to submission. The application is now with the Worcester City Council Planning Department and any comments can be directed to them accordingly.
Neither WHC or RGSW intend to make any further public statements whilst the planning application is being considered.
