Heads Start for Rowing
RGS Worcester’s rowers have kicked the winter training season off with nine wins at two events.
Harry Smith, racing the 3.3k course at Monkton Bluefriars Head last Saturday, beat seven opponents to win the J17 singles title, a clear 20 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. This was Harry’s second win of the term, having won Intermediate 3 at Worcester Head two weeks previously.
Ben Thomson and Ashley Nock won fastest double of the day at Monkton, also their second win of the term having won J18 double at Worcester.
There were also wins at Monkton for several girls’ crews including Megan Wang in WJ14 single – her first singles race. Nelly Ledger raced WJ15 single and beat Avon County by six seconds. The WJ16 quad (Elle Mortimer, Beatrice Price, Amelia Fish, Harriet Holyhead) beat Great Marlow School, and the Women’s Intermediate 3 double (Olivia Sparks and Lauren Rogers) beat Gloucester University.
The J15 boys’ quad (Ben Walker, Alex Owen, Jack Beasley and Ben Jarvis, coxed by Adam Smith) earned their first ever win at Worcester Head over the 4.5k course beating crews from King’s, Worcester Rowing Club and Hereford Cathedral School.
Also in Rowing, GB rowing coach and former RGS pupil Tom Dyson is visiting the School to talk to students about his Rio 2016 and London 2012 Olympic experiences as one of the country’s top rowing coaches. All students are invited to attend the talk at 4pm on 9 November 2016 in Main Hall. For further details, contact Mrs Jane Sullivan, Head of Rowing, jcs@rgsw.org.uk
