Greenpower Rocking Rockingham
The sound of the alarm signalled the final early morning of the season; it was Finals day for our Year Nine Greenpower team. Unfortunately, the weather forecast was totally accurate including heavy rain, strong winds and cool temperatures. With eight eager team members on board, we made our way to Rockingham Raceway to complete final preparations before embarking on two ninety-minute races.
The Practice Race was all but abandoned due to the electric gremlins rearing their ugly heads. Running repairs were hastily made and a slight alteration to the gear ratio was needed due to the windy conditions. It was an apprehensive wait for Race One to ensure the car was running as expected. The first three drivers were Ellie Nicholls, Matt Smith and Eleanor Fawcett. The Flag dropped and Ellie was off to a flying start. With no more issues with the car for the entire race, the seasoned drivers made short work of pit stops and the rest of the field. The drivers were thoroughly soaked to the skin in the open cockpit of the car but not once did any of them complain. Climbing from 44th on the grid, the team did an amazing job to finish 28th out of 75 teams who qualified for this final race. Ellie was clearly thrilled at obtaining the fastest lap of these three drivers.
For Race Two it was still pouring with rain and the temperature had plummeted still further. Jack Pitt was the starting driver and held his own against a strong field. After a seamless driver change with Grace Read, Superformance continued to progress up the table (again having started from 44th on the grid). The final driver for the last, and what is arguably the hardest leg was Maddie Holt, who held the team position. While other cars failed around her, Superformance, due to clever tactics, finished a superb 21st.
Huge thanks must go to Mr Holt for all his time, effort and inspiration. Mr Boss ably supported him for the Finals. We look forward to the off-season to continue to progress Greenpower at RGS.
