Girls’ Rugby Round up
On Friday 10 May, Girls’ Rugby officially took off at RGS Worcester! This was the first exciting step in a dream to take an RGS Girls’ team to the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens by 2021.
So how did this start and where did the idea come from? In the Lent term, a cohort of Senior girls approached Mr McGarry-Cross, Head of Rugby, to ask about the possibility of putting an RGS Girls’ Rugby team together. Excited by the idea, Mr McGarry-Cross then started to get in touch with his old contacts at the Worcester Warriors and spoke to Roy Davies, the Head Coach of the Worcester Valkyries. Roy Davies also expressed real excitement, especially at the prospect of an independent School in Worcester starting up Girls’ Rugby. He suggested that the Worcester Wanderers and The Valkyries would be in a position to help support the RGS Programme with coaching sessions and opportunities to play, should the girls wish to do so.
The RGS Boys, Rugby Sevens team, embarked on their annual trip to Rosslyn Park, and it is there, where the dream started to manifest itself into a reality. Watching Girls’ teams from other schools compete on the same day as our Under 14 Boys, it became clear that our RGS girls already have the physical and mental ability to compete on a National level. All they need is the knowledge and understanding of Rugby! It was then that the after school Rugby sessions, each Friday began.
With new faces turning up every week to take part in a series of non-contact games and skill development drills, the girls are quickly developing into an exciting team that might just spring a surprise in the years to come!
