Former RGS Rower in Hong Kong Rescue
On New Year's Eve, former RGS Worcester student, Mark Burnett was enjoying pre-firework entertainment in Hong Kong Harbour. He was suddenly grabbed by a man in a panic, saying his girlfriend had fallen over the wall into the ocean and could not swim and neither could he.
Going to the harbour wall edge and looking down into the sea, Mark could see the girl in a panic and great difficulty, drifting out. Still, clothed, Mark dived into the water and swam out to the girl. She was disappearing below the water but he managed to get an arm around her and swim with her back to the harbour wall, to a steep ladder and help her climb with the aid of a Japanese man, who had been previously entertaining the crowds.
Mark left RGS Worcester in 2001 and has lived and worked in Hong Kong for nearly five years, where he has just set up his own business. Mrs Burnett (Mark’s mother) spoke of how proud she is of Mark and said, “RGS, has played an enormous part in Mark’s life, instilling confidence and opportunities, which he may never have achieved at a lesser school.”
