It has been a busy week for Golf with the annual Parents v Pupils v Staff match that took place at Boughton Park Golf Club and the English Schools Team Championships that was played at Woodhall Spa. Cameron Hamilton-Patel in Year Eleven set a new competition record with an individual score of 48 stableford points. Alfie Cook, also Year Eleven, was second with 44 points. Despite the heroics of the pupils, they were not able to beat the parents who managed to retain the team trophy. There was a glut of birdies too, 14 in total from the 22 players. My thanks to all who took part and to Mr Newport and Mr Smith for their help.
The team of Emily Furniss (Year Ten), Brandon Sarfo (Year Eight) and Jack Wreghitt (Year Eleven) set out for Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire and the home of England Golf to compete in the English Schools' Team Championship. This was by virtue of finishing runners up in the Worcestershire county event in April. The Tuesday round was a practice round over the Bracken Course, a magnificent course of pine trees, bracken (obviously), water, subtly placed bunkers and treacherous greens. Having found their feet in the sunshine and wind, the players were ready for the final on Wednesday but perhaps not the very wet conditions later in the round. The best two scores counted and Emily's 37 stableford points (one shot better than her handicap) was a tremendous score in challenging conditions. Mrs Howe and I were lucky enough to see her score an eagle on a par 5 hole! The team came 15th out of the 33 teams taking part; a fabulous achievement and a wonderful experience that these young golfers can take with them.
My thanks to the three players who were great company throughout and to Mrs Howe for her help on her very last school trip.
