Desmond inspires an Indoor Row
Storm Desmond made the Wycliffe Small Boats Head impossible to hold last Saturday. With the river peaking at 4.42m in Worcester, water training was cancelled and so RGS Worcester, King’s School and Worcester Rowing Club got together for an impromptu indoor rowing competition at The King’s School Boat House.
The competition was over 2 kilometres with racing in teams of four. RGS fielded 41 rowers. The competition was fast and furious with many races decided on the rapid (or not-so-rapid) changeovers.
First up for RGS were two J17-18 boys’ teams and one J17-18 girls’ team. Our teams opted for the high-risk strategy of each racing 500m, gambling on being able to maintain a good sprint split with the minimum of three changeovers compared with other teams who were doing changeovers every 250 metres. Ashley Nock and Lauren Rogers put in good performances but soon found that 500 metres was a big ask for a sprint race! The teams put in a good show – our A team boys came third – with only two seconds between 2nd and 4th place it was a close call. For the girls the going proved tough and they were regretting their decision to race 500m at a time – they pulled a time of 1:54 giving them 4th place.
The J16s were next up and the RGS and King’s boys’ A teams raced neck-and-neck for the whole 2 kilometres. It was too close to call until the final five metres when King’s put in a huge push to finish one second ahead of the RGS boys.
In the J15 age group we fielded three boys’ and one girls’ teams. These teams had been practising their changeover techniques in Games the previous week and were pumped for some close racing. All the teams put in some good performances including PBs for many of the rowers.
A big thank you has to go to our coxswains who valiantly completed their 2 kilometre race to cheers from the whole room!
It was a great morning of team spirit and friendly rivalry between the three clubs, and we are all hoping that river levels come down enough so that we can race on the water this coming Saturday at the Mince Pie Head.
