Congratulations to Tom Elgar who did brilliantly to win Corpus Christi College Oxford’s ‘Schools Science Prize’ with his Chemistry essay about Quantum Mechanics.
Despite the challenge of his AS exams, Tom was still able to devote a week to preparing and writing the essay. Tom said, “Dr Smith made me aware of the essay. It was an area I had already done some reading for and found it quite interesting so I decided I would attempt the essay.
I did not expect a great deal to come of it. I applied mainly because I knew it would be a good experience. To end up as joint winner was extremely pleasing and the cash prize [of £250] was a very nice surprise!”
Tom is hoping to study Natural Sciences at Cambridge. This would allow him to pursue his joint interests in Physics and Chemistry whereas at Oxford, students have to choose one of Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Tom admits, “Winning an essay competition from an Oxford college has thrown a spanner in the works! It is a great position to be in so I really cannot complain.”
