Cathedrals and Chocolate – highlights of the Cologne trip
At the end of last term, 32 RGS students departed for Cologne with Dr Beer, Miss Binner, Miss Freeman and Mr Newport, to explore the city and its famous Christmas markets. The trip was a great success.
Lillian Heyburn and Kasia Czyrko from Year Seven describe their experiences:
Lillian – “My time in Germany was absolutely amazing, I got to experience a new culture for a weekend and we had a fair bit of fun while we were there.
Visiting the markets was probably one of the most fun things I ever did. Going from stall to stall with four other Year Seven friends was a real treat (and so was the hotdog that went with it!!)
The next morning we arose nice and early to climb the Cathedral tower. 1066 steps doesn't sound much until you have climbed them!! It was all worth it though because the view was incredible. In the afternoon we went to the Lindt factory, tasting the chocolate and the chocolate fountain. After a fun packed day of sightseeing, the best was yet to come because we went back to the market to watch the ice skaters which was a real treat.”
Kasia – “I was very nervous about going on a school trip so far away from home. I had never been abroad before without my mum and dad, but I was really excited, especially when I heard about the Christmas market there.
The coach journey was very long but we were looking forward to going shopping for Christmas presents in the market. The food in our hostel was good, but in the market the food was even better. I really enjoyed tasting my first German sausage.
We were allowed to roam the market in small groups and most of the people at the market spoke English, which was a real advantage because I’m only just starting to learn German.
I would definitely recommend this trip to others. It was exciting in the market and the chocolate factory was amazing.”
