Sport for Champions
We were lucky enough to be visited by David Smith, a high jumper, to talk to the children about his sporting career and as an ambassador for the charity Sport for Champions. The charity’s ethos is “Each child is capable of greatness, of becoming a champion, and our team aims to bring out that champion with our motto of self-belief and determination – anything is possible if you believe in yourself.” As I know many will recognise, this chimes with our belief at RGS Springfield, confidence can unlock potential but the messages about hard work and determination are also so vital in any success and to bring in a young athlete to talk to the children was too good an opportunity to miss.
He spoke to the children about his training regime and showed us some videos of his daily training. He trains for 6 hours every day, he watches his food intake carefully, but if allowed an occasional treat will choose chocolate. He talked to the children about how injury has affected his career and how that sometimes you have to dig deep to find the strength to keep going in the face of adversity.
He then spent the morning working with the children doing some fitness circuits. For those who had raised the most money, he gave certificates and signed photos. We enjoyed our morning and look forward to watching David compete in Australia.
